RICHARD SKEVINGTON
Just over 5 years ago I left university armed with a mathematics degree, a good deal of enthusiasm and a job offer for a technology development role in an investment bank in the City. Four years later, I was over-stressed, overworked, over-tired and a lot less enthusiastic about my working life. Actually, that's not completely true, it wasn't so much my working life I was disillusioned with but more the working environment of the company I was with. Anyway, I decided to try and do something about it and after a challenging and enjoyable recruitment process (full of logic problems and brainteasers!) I joined Data Connection.
I currently work within the MetaSwitch group. This part of the company is working on producing a full hardware and software solution for a telephone exchange switch. Now, my family think this sounds incredibly dull, but the first time I managed to wire up one of the test machines and used it to make a telephone call, I felt like I imagine the person who discovered the wheel must have felt. The fact that I get to solve interesting problems on a daily basis is one of the really good things about my job. Overall, the work is challenging, interesting and rewarding and it allows you to feel that you have really achieved something at the end of the day.
I haven't been with the company for very long but I already feel that I am making a valuable contribution. The people I work with are friendly and always willing to explain new things to me so I have quickly come to feel at ease and valued.
It's not just the people I directly work with who are easy to get on with. The company has extensive regular social activities and I've met quite a few people through these both from within the MetaSwitch group as well as from other areas of the company. I currently play football, snooker and softball once a week, all within the lunch hour. Both the football and the softball take place in the town park, which is a minutes walk away from the Data Connection offices. By the time you read this I will also be living in Enfield and will be able to walk to work in 10 minutes giving me extra spare time in my evenings. Sheer bliss after the hour-long commute (each way!) whilst I was working in the City.
I'm sure you'll be sceptically reading this thinking it's yet another hard sell from just another one of the many companies bidding for your talents and to a degree, I suppose it is. From my perspective though it's an honest portrayal of the company I work for and who I enjoy working for.
