NEC licenses DCL software for OIF UNI and NNI

Major systems vendors including NEC have selected DCL's UNI and NNI software and demonstrated interoperability at the recent OIF-sponsored event

London, UK: May 21, 2003. Data Connection Limited (DCL), the leading supplier of optical signaling and routing software, announced today that major companies, including NEC, have licensed its optical control plane software for NNI functionality. NNI is one of a suite of protocols developed by the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) to improve provisioning of optical networks across network boundaries and to client networks. DCL and its customers joined fellow equipment manufacturers to demonstrate interoperability in the successful UNI, NNI and DDRP interoperability event, sponsored by the OIF, at Optical Fiber Communication 2003 (OFC). This event showed complex provisioning scenarios in an optical network using multiple vendors' equipment, including UNI and NNI signaling, DDRP routing and full end-to-end provisioning.

DCL's integrated optical control plane includes source code components for MPLS (UNI, NNI, GMPLS and RSVP), IP Routing (OSPF-TE, IS-IS-TE and DDRP) and LMP. These components can be supplied pre-integrated for a complete control plane solution, or integrated with third-party components using open interfaces. DCL has led the development of optical control plane software; it provided the world's first GMPLS software in 2000, followed by the first portable implementation of OIF UNI and LMP in 2001. It continues to be at the forefront of optical control plane development and to supply all the major equipment manufacturers. DCL also provides complete packet control plane function, including LDP and BGP in the same architecture.

"NEC is once again driving the advancement of optical networking with its adoption of these demonstrably interoperable standards," said Phil McConnell, Data Connection CEO and co-founder. "We are very pleased that NEC has chosen to rely on us for this key technology in the deployment of multi-vendor optical MPLS networks."

"Our partnership with DCL has enabled us to focus on integrating their software into our hardware, while they are responsible for responding to the changes and developments in the standards," said Mr. Kurenai Murakami, Chief Manager of NEC's First Optical Network Division. "We did a very detailed evaluation and chose to work with DCL because of the high quality of their implementation, the flexibility of their architecture, and the responsiveness and professionalism of their support. Other key factors in the success of our partnership have been DCL's expertise and ability to form a close working relationship with us during the development."
